They really did look normal and alive. In fact, no one at their school suspected that they were undead zombies. It would take a close inspection to realize that their hearts didn't beat. Not to mention that their right hands were removable, but that was a bit of an aberration that they hopefully wouldn't have to demonstrate today.
And only a psychic of the right kind would see the black ring like a tattoo around both of their necks, showing that they were marked by death.
